A fire extinguisher is only useful when it is suitable for the fire risk in front of it. Selecting the top fire extinguisher types for a workplace is not a matter of choosing the largest unit or placing the same extinguisher by every exit. It requires a clear understanding of the activities, fuels, equipment and people on site.
For responsible persons, facilities managers and business owners, the objective is straightforward: provide appropriate first-aid fire-fighting equipment, maintain it correctly and ensure staff know when it is safe to use it. The wrong extinguisher can be ineffective or make a fire significantly more dangerous.
Why extinguisher selection must follow the fire risk assessment
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, duty holders in England and Wales must take general fire precautions that protect relevant people on their premises. Suitable fire-fighting equipment forms part of those precautions. The requirement is not simply to have extinguishers on the wall. They must be appropriate for the risks identified in the fire risk assessment.
A low-risk office with mainly paper, furniture and electrical equipment needs a different provision from a commercial kitchen, workshop, warehouse or plant room. A premises with lithium-ion battery charging, flammable liquids or server infrastructure may need further specialist consideration.
A competent assessment considers the likely causes of fire, the materials present, escape routes, the size and layout of the building, and who may be on site. It should also establish where extinguishers can be reached without requiring someone to travel towards the fire. Positioning, signage, staff instruction and servicing are as relevant as the extinguishing medium itself.
The top fire extinguisher types and where they fit
Most UK commercial premises use a combination of extinguishers. Modern portable extinguishers usually have a red body and a coloured band identifying their contents. Each type has strengths, limitations and specific fire classes for which it is intended.
Water extinguishers
Water extinguishers are designed for Class A fires involving ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, cardboard, textiles and many furnishings. They are commonly appropriate in offices, schools, retail spaces and general commercial areas where these are the main fuel sources.
They are not suitable for live electrical equipment, flammable liquids or cooking oil fires. Using water on an electrical fire can create an electric-shock hazard, while applying it to burning oil can spread the fire rapidly. Some water-based units carry additional ratings or additives, but their approved use should always be checked on the extinguisher label.
Foam extinguishers
Foam extinguishers are suitable for Class A fires and, where appropriately rated, Class B fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, paint or solvents. The foam forms a layer across the liquid surface, helping to cool the fire and reduce the vapours feeding it.
They can be useful in workshops, warehouses, maintenance areas and sites storing certain liquids. However, suitability depends on the precise substances present and how they are stored. Foam is not a universal answer for electrical risks, cooking oils or gas fires. Environmental requirements are also changing the market for some foam agents, so replacement choices should be made with competent advice rather than by like-for-like assumption.
Carbon dioxide extinguishers
Carbon dioxide, commonly called CO2, is a familiar choice for fires involving live electrical equipment. It is often positioned near electrical intake rooms, server rooms, offices with computer equipment and machinery with energised components. CO2 works by displacing oxygen around the fire and leaves no residue, which can reduce clean-up and damage to sensitive equipment.
Its limitations matter. CO2 offers limited cooling, so a fire in surrounding materials can reignite once the gas disperses. It is generally unsuitable for deep-seated Class A fires. In small, poorly ventilated spaces, discharge must also be carefully considered because high concentrations of CO2 can present a risk to people. Appropriate staff training is essential.
Dry powder extinguishers
Dry powder extinguishers are highly versatile and may be rated for Class A, Class B and Class C fires, including flammable gases. They can be effective in external areas, vehicle compounds, plant environments and some industrial settings.
For many indoor workplaces, however, powder is not the preferred option. Discharge creates a dense cloud that can obscure escape routes, affect breathing and contaminate equipment. The powder can also be corrosive, causing significant damage to electrical and mechanical systems after an incident. Where powder has traditionally been used indoors, a review of the actual risks may identify a more suitable alternative.
Wet chemical extinguishers
Wet chemical extinguishers are specifically intended for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats. They are the key extinguisher type for commercial kitchens using deep-fat fryers, griddles or other high-temperature cooking equipment.
The wet chemical reacts with the burning oil to form a soap-like layer that suppresses flames and helps cool the surface. Water, foam, CO2 and standard powder extinguishers are not substitutes for a correctly rated wet chemical unit where a cooking-oil risk exists. Kitchen staff should also understand when to isolate fuel or power supplies, if safe to do so, and when evacuation is the only appropriate action.
Specialist extinguishers for emerging or unusual risks
Some risks fall outside the standard workplace pattern. Lithium-ion batteries used in tools, e-bikes, energy storage systems or charging stations can enter thermal runaway, producing intense heat and potentially re-igniting after initial suppression. Specialist agents and procedures may be required, but their suitability depends on battery chemistry, size, location and the wider emergency plan.
Similarly, metal fires, known as Class D fires, need specialist dry powders designed for the particular metal involved. Water or standard extinguishers can react violently with certain burning metals. Sites handling magnesium, aluminium powders, sodium, lithium metal or similar materials should obtain tailored technical advice.
Match extinguishers to fire classes, not wall space
The principal fire classes help explain why a mixed provision is often needed. Class A covers solid combustibles. Class B covers flammable liquids. Class C covers flammable gases. Class D covers combustible metals. Class F covers cooking oils and fats. Electrical equipment is not a separate fire class, but it affects which extinguishing media can be used safely while equipment remains live.
Extinguishers should be located on escape routes, near identified risks and in visible, accessible positions. They should never obstruct a route, be hidden behind stored goods or be positioned so close to a high-risk area that a person would need to pass the fire to reach them.
British Standard guidance, including BS 5306-8, supports the selection and positioning of portable fire extinguishers. It is particularly valuable for multi-use buildings and premises with changing layouts, tenants or processes. A competent survey can translate that guidance into a practical provision for the site rather than relying on generic extinguisher packages.
Servicing and training turn equipment into protection
An extinguisher can lose pressure, suffer damage, become obstructed or be removed from its designated point without anyone noticing. Routine visual checks by site staff should be supported by professional inspection and maintenance in line with BS 5306-3. Records should be clear enough to demonstrate that equipment has been checked and remains available.
Training also needs to be proportionate to the workplace. Not every employee should be expected to tackle a fire. Staff must understand the alarm and evacuation arrangements first. Anyone nominated to use extinguishers should know the type available, the fires it can address, how to keep an exit behind them and when to stop immediately.
The safest decision is often to raise the alarm, leave the area and call the fire and rescue service. Portable extinguishers are for small, early-stage fires where conditions are safe, not for protecting property at the expense of people.
Avoid common selection mistakes
A standard office may appear simple, but the details can change the requirement. A kitchenette with deep-fat frying, a battery charging cupboard, a workshop bench using solvents or a server room can introduce different risks within the same building. Treating all areas as general office space leaves gaps in protection.
Other common issues include retaining powder units in occupied indoor areas without reviewing their impact, installing CO2 units as the only response to a combustible materials fire, and allowing furniture or stock to block extinguishers. Fire risk assessments and planned maintenance should be reviewed after refurbishments, process changes, new machinery or changes in occupancy.
For organisations managing several sites, consistent records, standardised checks and a trusted maintenance partner make compliance easier to control. The provision may be consistent across similar areas, but it should never be assumed identical without considering each premises and its hazards.
A properly specified extinguisher provision gives staff a safer option in the first moments of a fire and gives duty holders confidence that their arrangements are defensible.
