A break-in rarely affects only the value of stolen stock. It can interrupt trading, unsettle staff, expose confidential information and leave a site vulnerable until repairs are complete. Well-designed intruder alarms give businesses an early warning of unauthorised access, helping to protect people, property and continuity of operations.
For a commercial premises, the right answer is rarely a standard alarm package. A small office, an empty warehouse, a school, a retail unit and a multi-site estate all present different risks. The most effective system starts with a proper understanding of how the building is used, where its weak points are and what must happen when an alarm activates.
Start with the risk, not the equipment
The first question is not whether to choose wired or wireless detectors. It is what you need the system to protect.
A site survey should consider the building layout, entry and exit points, roof access, windows, outbuildings, loading areas and any secluded elevations. It should also account for the nature of the business. High-value stock, IT equipment, controlled medicines, tools, cash handling areas and sensitive records may require additional protection beyond standard perimeter detection.
Daily activity matters just as much. A busy office with staff arriving at different times needs straightforward setting and unsetting procedures. A warehouse with forklifts, changes in temperature and high ceilings needs detectors suited to that environment. In premises shared by several occupiers, the alarm may need separate areas so each tenant can secure its own space without affecting others.
A good design balances security with practical use. Too little coverage can leave obvious gaps. Too much poorly planned detection can create false alarms, frustrate users and reduce confidence in the system.
How commercial intruder alarms work
Most intruder alarm systems combine several detection methods, a control panel, user controls and a means of signalling an alarm. The exact specification depends on the assessed risk, but the principle is simple: detect unauthorised entry quickly, communicate the event reliably and make it possible for an agreed response to follow.
Perimeter protection may include door contacts, window contacts and shock or vibration detection. These can identify an attempted entry before someone moves through the building. Internal detection commonly uses motion sensors, while more specialised devices can protect valuable items, vulnerable rooms or particular access routes.

Wireless devices can be valuable where running cables would be difficult, disruptive or visually unsuitable. They are particularly useful for occupied buildings, heritage features and extensions to an existing system. However, battery condition, signal strength and device supervision must form part of the ongoing maintenance plan.
Many commercial sites benefit from a combined approach. The right choice should reflect the premises, programme of works and future plans rather than a preference for one technology alone.
Alarm grading and police response
Commercial intruder alarm systems are generally designed with reference to BS EN 50131 and related standards. The appropriate grade reflects the level of risk and the likely capability of an intruder. A premises with ordinary commercial risks may need a different level of protection from a site holding high-value goods or operating in an area with repeated criminal activity.
This is one reason a site-specific survey matters. Specifying a higher grade than needed can add unnecessary cost and operational complexity. Specifying too low a grade may leave insurers, stakeholders or the business itself dissatisfied with the level of protection.
If police response is a requirement, the system, signalling arrangement and monitoring service need to meet specific conditions. This typically involves confirmed alarm technology and connection to an approved Alarm Receiving Centre, alongside a Unique Reference Number process managed with the local police force. Police response should never be assumed simply because an alarm has a bell box or sends notifications to a mobile phone.
Insurers may also set conditions for security systems, particularly where stock values are high or premises are unoccupied for long periods. Checking these requirements before installation avoids costly changes later.
Design for people who will use the system
An intruder alarm only protects the site when it is used correctly. Simple, consistent operation is therefore a security feature, not an optional extra.
Staff should know who is authorised to set and unset the alarm, what to do if they arrive outside normal hours and how to report a fault. Managers should be able to remove access promptly when employees leave, contractors complete work or responsibilities change. Individual user codes or credentials create a clearer audit trail than a shared code passed between teams.
False alarms deserve particular attention. They can result from poor detector positioning, open windows, pets, machinery, environmental changes or rushed setting procedures. Repeated activations can disrupt staff, create call-out costs and, where police response arrangements apply, affect the site’s response status.
A competent installation reduces this risk through appropriate detector selection, careful positioning, zoning and commissioning. It should also include a handover that explains daily operation in plain English. Technical capability is valuable, but it must work for the people opening and closing the building every day.
Integrating intruder alarms with wider security
Intruder detection is strongest when it forms part of a considered security strategy. CCTV can help verify what is happening on site and support investigation after an incident. Access control can limit entry to authorised people and identify who entered a sensitive area. Security fog may be appropriate in certain high-risk environments, obscuring visibility and limiting an intruder’s ability to locate valuables following a confirmed activation.
Integration does not mean every site needs every technology. A small office may need a straightforward alarm, secure external doors and clear keyholder arrangements. A large distribution facility may benefit from monitored detection, ANPR or access control at gates, CCTV coverage of loading areas and compartmentalised alarm zones.
The value comes from making systems work together in a way that supports real operating risks. It also helps to plan for growth. If a business expects to add a warehouse bay, new office floor or additional location, the alarm infrastructure should be capable of adapting without a complete replacement.
Maintenance is part of protection
An alarm installation is not a fit-and-forget purchase. Detectors can become obstructed, batteries deteriorate, communications can fail and building alterations can change the way a system performs. A maintenance programme identifies these issues before they become a problem during an incident.
Planned servicing should include functional testing, inspection of devices, checks on signalling paths, review of event history and confirmation that the system remains appropriate for the premises. Engineers should also identify changes that could affect coverage, such as new racking, partition walls, relocated equipment or an extension.
Keyholder details, user permissions and escalation contacts need regular review too. An alarm may operate perfectly, but its response plan fails if the only named keyholder left the business months ago.
