A general overview camera can show that activity took place in an aisle. A properly planned identification camera at a controlled point can show who entered it. This distinction matters when footage is required for an internal investigation, an insurance claim or police evidence.

For external approaches, number plate capture may also be appropriate. ANPR can provide a record of vehicles entering and leaving a site, but it needs careful positioning and configuration to work reliably in changing weather, headlights and vehicle speeds. It is most valuable where vehicle movements are a known security or operational concern.

Choose equipment for the warehouse environment

Modern IP CCTV systems can provide high-quality images, remote viewing and intelligent event alerts. However, the best choice depends on the building, network capacity, security priorities and who will use the system day to day.

Fixed cameras are often suitable for consistent views of entrances, aisles and loading points. Varifocal cameras allow a view to be set precisely during commissioning, which can be useful where the distance to a target area varies. Pan-tilt-zoom cameras can cover wide yards or large external areas, but they should not be treated as a replacement for fixed coverage. If the camera is looking in one direction, it cannot record another.

Low-light performance is particularly relevant for warehouses operating early mornings, overnight or through winter. Infrared illumination can support visibility in darkness, while additional white light may be necessary where colour detail is needed. The correct approach depends on the area, neighbour impact and the level of evidence required.

Recording capacity also deserves attention. Retaining footage for too short a period can leave a business unable to investigate an incident reported days later. Retaining it indefinitely creates unnecessary storage costs and data protection considerations. A sensible retention period should reflect the site’s risks, the time taken to identify issues and the organisation’s documented CCTV policy.

Integrate CCTV with access control and intruder detection

CCTV is stronger when it supports the wider security system rather than operating in isolation. Access control records can show when a door was used and by which credential, while corresponding footage can help verify the event. This is useful at staff entrances, restricted stock cages, IT rooms and areas holding hazardous materials.

Integration with an intruder alarm can provide video verification when an alarm activates outside working hours. Instead of responding to an unexplained alert, authorised personnel or a monitoring provider may be able to assess the relevant camera view and make an informed decision. This can reduce false call-outs while ensuring genuine incidents receive prompt attention.

The degree of integration should remain proportionate. A small warehouse may need secure recording, a few well-placed cameras and reliable remote access. A multi-site distribution operation may benefit from centralised monitoring, ANPR, access events and consistent system management across its estate. The right design follows the risk assessment and operating model, not a one-size-fits-all package.

Meet data protection responsibilities without losing security value

Warehouse operators should have a clear purpose for using cameras, such as preventing crime, protecting stock, safeguarding staff or investigating incidents. Cameras should not be installed in areas where people reasonably expect privacy, including toilets and changing facilities.
